2012 Holdredge Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir"The True" 5L
The "voice of a cold place"
This vineyard is about as far north and west as you can go in Sonoma County. Generally situated on the second ridge in from the pacific, this site is marked by cold temperatures. This is a late- arriving crop, and even as long as we push it, flavors develop, but sugars accumulate much more slowly.
For a few years, I have been saying how this vineyard always makes a lighter styled wine. Well, mother nature apparently had heard enough of this and decided to color me wrong. In 2012 we had enough late season warmth in that area (almost like an inversion- the fog left early each day and the sun took over) that got the fruit more ripe than we’d ever seen. From the moment the grapes hit the door, it was a showpiece of the vintage sometimes as fruit comes in, its distinctiveness just shines through. Without sacrificing elegance, this is just a beautiful testament to what fully ripe cold climate grapes can become.
Dark ripe fruit- black raspberries, black cherries, rose pastilles and even a touch of star anise grace the entry, which yields to a real sense of earth- a chalkiness, a sense of minerals and gentle ripe tannins. Clean, full and vibrant- but with richness that surprises, and a bright acidity that lifts the finish. Despite all that, it also has a more ethereal component- almost as if those flavors had drifted in with the fog and become brightened by the sun.
