2012 Holdredge Russian River Valley Pinot Noir Shaken Not Stirred 3L
"One place, one voice"
This is our only single-clone wine; made entierly of "Martini" clone, and it is is grown in a single vineyard. Hence, one place, one voice".
“Martini” clone- a real workhorse in California wine history, first identified and propigated in the mid 1960's at UC Davis. After years of being a "go to" strain of Pinot Noir, almost overnight it became disfavored by others in the industry because it was thought to make wines that were “too light”.
Not us- we’ve always loved the classic flavors and aromatics- it really exemplifies what “traditional” Russian River Pinot is all about. We’ve always bled around 10% of the juice to improve concentration, but in 2012 we bled over 30% of the juice due to the larger berries than usual. That improved the ratio of grapeskin tojuice signifcant;y, and allowed us to extract more of what we think this place has to offer. It turned out to be a good call- the wine exemplifies precisely what we expect from that site.
My tasting notes had a single word in capital letters: “RED”. I underlined it three times, so I guess I was pretty sure of myself. This has red currants, red raspberries, ripe red cherries – it is just packed with red fruit. The mouthfeel is rich and round (one of us said “opulent”), with a hint of vanilla and a touch of sage. One taster who had it "blind" (not knowing anything about the wine) said “this is absolutely what I want in Russian River Pinot Noir.”
Like last year, we really think this wine is a crowd pleaser- not in a garish or flashy way; just that it really has a voice that says “Russian River.” Coincidentally, this is exactly what we want from a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir.
